Learner drivers are being urged to book their driving theory test now, after new analysis of UK government data revealed that pass rates improve significantly in the coming months.

Research by My Car Reg Check analysing long-term Department for Transport statistics shows that late spring and summer consistently deliver the highest theory test pass rates, with April, July and August among the strongest months for success.

With many test centres already booking weeks in advance, experts say learners hoping to sit the test during the higher pass-rate window should secure their slot soon.

“Timing can play a bigger role than many learners realise,” says a spokesperson from My Car Reg Check. “The data shows that pass rates improve as we move into spring and summer, so learners planning to take their test soon should consider booking now to secure those months.”

Although the difference may appear small, across hundreds of thousands of tests each year it represents a meaningful shift in overall success rates.

Why Pass Rates Improve Later in the Year

My Car Reg Check’s analysis suggests several factors may influence the seasonal difference.

Winter test bookings are often driven by New Year goals, with many learners rushing to sit the test quickly after the festive period. In contrast, learners sitting the test later in the year are more likely to have spent longer revising and preparing.

“January is when many people decide they want to start driving,” the spokesperson adds. “But the learners who take a bit more time and sit the test later in the year often perform better.”

The Risks of Rushing the Theory Stage

Experts warn that rushing through the theory stage can create problems once drivers get on the road.

Drivers with weaker theory knowledge may be more likely to:

Misjudge stopping distances

Miss warning lights or MOT advisories

Make poor decisions when buying or maintaining vehicles
