Bakan ve Milletvekili Saraj Jones’ın, teşekkür bildirisi ve hayata geçirmek istediği projeler:
Dear Hulya,
It gives me great pleasure to write to you with my monthly members newsletter for the first time under our new Labour government.
The choice at the election was clear, five more years of chaos and decline under the Tories, or a fresh start with Labour.
This will be a government of public service. Under Keir Starmer, we will work night and day to restore integrity and public trust in our politics. Politics can be a force for good, and we will show that.
We have a lot to do, but the work to deliver the change Britain needs has already begun.
Here is a look at what I have been up to in the last 4 weeks…
Celebrating victory in Croydon
Thank you to everyone who came to our victory party at Ruskin House. It was brilliant to bring members from across Croydon together to celebrate Labour’s historic victory and to say thank you to everyone for all their hard work during the campaign. None of this would be possible without you. To everyone who knocked on doors, delivered leaflets, phone banked, bagged-up literature, put up posters and correx boards, drove members around and made cups of tea – thank you. Even though we cut Chris Philp’s majority by 10,000, we were all disappointed that we couldn’t get our incredible candidate Ben over the line in Croydon South. Ben ran the most positive, warm, and committed campaign and I am proud to call him a friend.
King’s Speech recap
Our first King’s Speech set out 40 new Bills, with economic growth at heart. Here are just 10:
- We are making sure nobody can play fast and loose with public finances – and that we avoid chaos which leaves families with spiralling bills. The Budget Responsibility Bill will ensure that significant fiscal announcements must be properly scrutinised and that taxpayers’ money is respected.
- We will get Britain building through planning reform. as we speed up the delivery of high-quality housing and infrastructure. Our Planning and Infrastructure Bill will help provide more housing across the country and support sustained economic growth. We will also give more rights to people renting their homes, including putting an end to unfair no-fault evictions, and reforming grounds for possession.
- We will make work pay, and our Employment Rights Bill is a significant step towards delivering the biggest upgrade to workers’ rights in a generation. We will ban exploitative zero-hours contracts, end fire and rehire, and introduce basic employment rights from day one. We’ll make sure the minimum wage is a genuine living wage.
- Empowering communities – our National Wealth Fund will create wealth in every community and hand power back to local leaders. This means moving power out of Westminster and into the hands of metro mayors and combined authorities.
- Better transport – our transport Bills will will improve the railways by reforming rail franchising, establishing Great British Railways and bringing train operators into public ownership. And we’ll introduce the Better Buses Bill to allow local leaders to take control of their bus services.
- Great British Energy will make Britain a clean energy superpower by 2030. Our new publicly owned clean-energy company will help boost energy security, create jobs and build supply chains in every corner of the UK. We’ll also introduce legislation that helps unlock investment in energy infrastructure, supports sustainable aviation fuel production and strengthens the water regulator’s powers.
- We will strengthen the border with a new Bill that modernises the asylum and immigration system, including launching a new Border Security Command to smash the criminal smuggling gangs, tackling the problem at source.
- Our Crime and Policing Bill will strengthen community policing in order to deal with anti-social behaviour and strengthen support for victims. The new Terrorism Bill will make public venues safer from terrorism, and we will halve violence against women and girls.
- We will put 6,500 more teachers in our children’s classrooms, and our Children’s Wellbeing Bill will raise standards in education and promote children’s wellbeing.
- Our plan to improve the NHS will include reducing waiting times and focusing on preventative measures. We will modernise the Mental Health Act and introduce legislation to help stop young people smoking and vaping with our Tobacco and Vapes Bill.
I’m the Minister of State for Industry
I was honoured to be asked by the Prime Minister to serve as Minister of State for Industry in the Department for Business and Trade and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. It is an absolute joy to be part of dynamic ministerial teams supported by dedicated and hard-working civil servants under Jonathan Reynolds and Ed Miliband.
In my first couple of weeks I spoke to key stakeholders at the Farnborough Airshow, visited the Ford and CNH facilities in Basildon (and even enjoyed a test drive!) and spoke at the parliamentary reception for the Carbon Capture and Storage Association.
Our Industrial Strategy and mission to unlock a decade of national renewal will unlock growth and create thousands of new jobs. Already in the first week of this new government we:
- Ended 9yr onshore wind ban in 72 hours
- Set up our 2030 Clean Power Mission Control
- Consented to new solar energy projects, powering the equivalent of almost 400,000 new homes
- Established our new National Wealth Fund
- Met with our G7 counterparts in Italy, setting out how the UK intends to work with global partners to address challenges ahead, prioritising economic resilience to spur growth
- Announced £100m in joint govt-industry funding for clean air technology
History made!
We now have 190 incredible Labour women MPs, helping to make up the largest cohort of female MPs ever! As the first female MP ever elected in Croydon, I am so proud of how far we have come. Not forgetting our very own Natasha Irons, our newly elected MP for Croydon East who I know will work tirelessly for her constituents and who I look forward to working with as we deliver the change that Croydon needs.
Out and about in Croydon West
Canvassing doesn’t stop once the election has taken place! It was great to get back out talking to constituents about their concerns and what I can do to help. My team and I have enjoyed some high-impact engagement sessions at school gates at drop-off time, introducing myself to parents and guardians as their local MP and letting them know I am always on hand to help with any issues they might be facing. If you ever want to get in touch with me about a problem you are having, please get in touch. My contact details are at the bottom of this email.
Culinary delights at Curry on Naanstop
It was a joy to meet with business owners Swati and Karthikk at their business at Boxpark recently and to enjoy a delicious lunch. They began in 2018, serving up delicious Mumbai street food in Croydon’s own Surrey Street market. They have since built their business from the ground up and has become a thriving independent business in the heart of Croydon. The Labour Party knows the value of small businesses; they are not just the lifeblood of our communities but essential to our economic success.
Tackling Knife Crime is a top priority for Labour
It was great to meet Project Lifeline again who do important work supporting young people in Croydon. Labour is serious about tackling knife crime. Our Crime and Policing Bill will deliver on the Government’s mission to halve serious violence over a decade, with strong action to tackle knife crime and violence against women and girls.
We will get dangerous knives and other weapons off our streets by banning ninja swords and other lethal blades and create arrangements for local Young Futures prevention partnerships to bring together services to support at-risk teenagers.
I know how personal the issue of knife crime is to our community. I am proud of the work that was done when I set up the All-Party Group on Knife Crime when I was first elected and how that work can be put into action now that we have a Labour government.
Supporting our next generation
Earlier this month I visited HD Auto Specialists in South Norwood. Their garage puts together some excellent schemes to help young people across Croydon by providing them with their first experience of work. We talked about their plans and worked out ways in which I could help them expand their youth support networks in future. I’m very excited that under our Skills England Bill, we will establish Skills England which will work with industry, unions and the Industrial Strategy Council to deliver on our manifesto commitment to simplify and improve the skills system, ensuring the supply of skills needed for our economy and breaking down barriers to opportunity.
Issues of local concern going forward
Private rental properties
I am increasingly worried about the number of families telling me that they are being refused private rental properties by Croydon letting agents because they are on Universal Credit. This is illegal. It is against the law to turn people away or be refused private rented accommodation because they are receiving benefits. I am relieved that under this government we will introduce a Renters’ Rights Bill to give greater rights and protections to people renting their homes. This government is determined to address the insecurity and injustice that far too many renters experience by fundamentally reforming the private rented sector and improving the quality of housing in it.
Casework overview since 5 July
- 331 new cases created – an average of 82.75 new cases per week since polling day
- This does not include cases in Croydon West that we were already dealing with before 5 July when the constituent was a resident of Croydon Central
- 1,102 casework emails received since 5 July – an average of 275.5 per week since polling day
- 31% of cases created since 5 July are Housing-related – similarly, a third of our cases in Croydon Central were consistently Housing-related
- Other most common casework issues in the past 4 weeks relate to local government, asylum and immigration, and crime
- Wards where we have received the most casework in the past 4 weeks were Waddon, Selhurst and Broad Green
I have had some positive casework outcomes already. A lady had her Blue Badge stolen from her car and was given a penalty charge notice. Initially Croydon Council rejected her appeal, but I was able to get the penalty charge dropped. A mother came to me and told me that she booked a summer holiday, but the Passport Office had not issued her daughter her passport in time to travel. After my intervention, her daughter’s passport was delivered within 11 days and they could go on their holiday. I was also able to help get a family into a proper home after living in a hotel, as well as helping one constituent get their Universal Credit payments reinstated after they faced issues with the DWP.
A huge thanks must go to my small team for all their hard work, and their continued ability to get results. If there is anything I can do as your MP to support you, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. My team and I are always on hand to offer any advice and support that we can offer. If you think I can help, please email me at sarah.jones.@croydonlabour.org.uk
With best wishes,
Sarah
