Olcay Morreale Solo Exhibition; experience the vibrant colors of spring at Yummzy Cafe

Ebru Art:The Art of Painting on Water

Ebru art is a traditional Turkish craft that has endured from the Ottoman Empire to the present day, focusing on creating organic patterns on the surface of water. One of the most remarkable aspects of this art form is the free movement of colors across water, which can be instantaneously transferred onto paper. Ebru art is not merely a technique; it is a harmonious blend of creativity and nature.

At the core of Ebru art lies the delicate placement of thin coloured paints on water, with patterns crafted using specialized tools. The paints are mineral based, derived from natural dyes sourced from metal oxides found in nature. This process involves using a marble grinder to convert the paints into a fine powder. The colors are then carefully sprinkled on the water’s surface and shaped with precision.

When paper is placed on the water, the patterns are transferred instantly.

A Fresh Perspective on Ebru Art: Artist Olcay Morreale
Olcay (OJ) Morreale, an artist known for reinterpreting traditional Ebru art through a modern lens, will present his work at London’s renowned Yummzy Cafe from May 1 to May 31, 2025. The exhibition will showcase Morreale’s mastery of Ebru art and the enchantment of this craft, culminating in a special presentation on May 16.

This exhibition will take place at Yummzy Cafe in Cabot Square, Canary Wharf, where Morreale’s artwork will feature in an “event showcase.” It’s an unmissable opportunity for those eager to explore the historical depth and contemporary interpretations of marbling art.

Theme of the Art Exhibition
Olcay emphasises that the theme of his work revolves around the harmonious relationship between nature, tradition, and artistic spontaneity. By embracing the organic beauty of nature, traditional Ebru art finds an opportunity for control, allowing creativity to flow with natural materials.

Previously, Olcay’s works have been showcased at prestigious venues, including the London College of Communication (LCC) part of UAL, Trinity Buoy Wharf, Canada Water Cafe, UEL, Liminal Art Association, and the Canary Wharf Ideas Store. Morreale aims to help individuals overcome barriers and achieve personal goals through creative workshops and events.

Who is Olcay (OJ) Morreale?
Since 2005, Olcay (OJ) Morreale has led a project called "Fill Your Life with Creative Arts" in East London. He also works as a social entrepreneur under the Sunflower Initiative, focusing on social content. A graduate of the University of the Arts London (UAL) in 2013, Morreale is a graphic designer, community artist, and educator who uses art and creativity as instruments for social development.

As Olcay states that: "The natural process of marbling art serves as my primary source of inspiration. The rich natural dyes of Anatolia captivate my imagination. The historical Turkish ebru technique, which involves floating paint on thickened water to create organic patterns, profoundly influences me. By employing special tools, artists achieve a lasting outcome by transferring these harmonious designs onto paper placed on the water’s surface. Creating beautiful marbling requires a delicate touch, refined aesthetics, and an openness to the unexpected patterns that manifest on the water."
