To: The UK Government and Members of Parliament
We urge you to keep the 5-year Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) pathway for Skilled Worker visa holders already in the UK. Do not retrospectively apply any proposed 10-year ILR rule to those who came here based on the current 5-year settlement route.
Why this matters:
- Fairness and Trust: Skilled workers moved to the UK, contributing their skills and taxes, based on a 5-year settlement promise. Changing this now is a breach of trust and deeply unfair to those who planned their lives around the existing rules.
- Life Disruption: Applying a 10-year rule retrospectively would cause immense personal hardship, financial strain (through extra fees), and prolonged uncertainty for families trying to build their lives in the UK.
- UK’s Reputation & Economy: This change risks damaging the UK’s reputation as a fair destination for global talent and could lead to skilled individuals leaving, harming our businesses and economy.
