“Everybody Champions” Community Art – Funded by the Wimbledon Foundation
Celebrating Diversity through Art: Katherine Low Settlement Unveils 4 Wall Hangings
Katherine Low Settlement (KLS), a much-loved charity in Battersea, is celebrating its 100th Anniversary and is excited to announce the completion of a community-led project entitled “Everybody Champions”. Spearheaded by artist and KLS Chief Creative Officer, Adalberto Lonardi, and generously funded by the Wimbledon Foundation, the Charity has produced four vibrant and expressive wall hangings which celebrate diversity and inclusion through the lens of sport and tennis.
The “Everybody Champions” mixed media embroidery hangings measure 200cm x 126cm each and were created by members of the three programmes KLS runs – the ‘Love to Learn’ children’s educational programme, the KLS Elders’ programme and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) educational programme.
The four wall hangings were crafted in the community workshops at KLS, with each one designed by combining elements from 40 drawings made by 60 members of the KLS community, during intergenerational workshops.
The project enlisted the expertise of four professional textile artists, each leading the creation of one of the wall hangings, in collaboration with the community. These artworks are embarking on a London tour which starts at The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum.
Sarah Gibb, Chief Executive of Katherine Low Settlement said “The “Everybody Champions” project is a testament to the power of community collaboration and artistic expression, fostering unity and celebrating diversity through the medium of textile art. We do encourage everyone who can to visit them and if possible, make a donation to our 100th anniversary building fundraising campaign.”
